Three information outlets selected to reach underserved communities in Wichita

What if we launch a call for ideas on enhancing information in our city? This vision inspired the creation of the Info Challenge, a collaboration between the Wichita Foundation (WF) and Tiny News Collective (TNC) to identify and jumpstart three local information concepts.

After a meticulous selection process in December 2023, three pioneering ventures emerged to deliver inclusive stories to underserved communities across Wichita:

  • Planeta Venus | Published by founder and AB&C Bilingual Resources owner, Claudia Amaro, Planeta Venus is serving as a crucial bridge for English and Spanish-speaking communities in Wichita. Read more
  • TMBP Media | Founded by Dr. Latasha Eley Kelly, the information outlet was created to amplify representation, cultivate perspective and empower the community. Readers will encounter stories of community members, leaders and entrepreneurs embedded in the Black community. Read more
  • The SHOUT | The brainchild of art enthusiasts Emily Christensen and Teri Mott, the SHOUT: Wichita Arts & Culture, Loud & Clear will amplify our vibrant arts community and connect us to the talent propelling it forward. Read more

Each news outlet is equipped with a $30,000 gift from Press Forward Wichita at WF to fuel their operations. Each newsroom also received a two-year TNC membership, unlocking access to resources and connections with local news founders nationwide.

The Challenge involved community outreach with the help of Mamarazzi Communications – founded by Ti’Juana, a local entrepreneur and Wichita advocate – and input from an advisory committee of seven Wichita residents.

“One of our strategic initiatives is to create information accessibility to empower residents to make informed decisions,” said WF Chief Strategy Officer Courtney Bengtson. “We were astounded to receive over 20 applications. This gives us hope for the future of local news and making sure that people are engaged in decisions that influence our everyday lives.”
