Dr. Latasha Eley Kelly, the founder of TMBP Media, first conceptualized her media vision three years ago while working as a college professor and qualitative researcher. Her news outlet aims to amplify representation, cultivate perspective, and empower the community.
After receiving a grant from the Wichita Foundation’s Info Challenge* in late 2023, Dr. Eley Kelly wasted no time in getting started. She enlisted the help of a local videographer and secured a location to film her Black in One Piece podcast series. Three episodes have already been recorded, with the podcast making its debut on Juneteenth.
In June, a TMBP Media launch event featured a panel discussion with guests like Joseph Shepard, chief of staff at Lead for America, who have appeared in initial episodes. Shepard believes that TMBP Media will be instrumental in sparking important dialogue across diverse communities.
“I felt like it was both therapeutic and empowering to be in a space that allowed me to reflect on my experiences,” said Shepard. “I think anytime we get to hear about experiences that are not necessarily our own, it gives us the insight we need to lead better…in a state of curiosity, but also compassion.”
Dr. Eley Kelly affirms that fostering such dialogue is the goal.
“My hope is that the Black community finds the podcast to be authentic, providing them with the opportunity to hear and see themselves through the stories my guests share,” said Dr. Eley Kelly. “And for those who are not from the community, I hope this platform helps change perspectives and promotes constructive conversations.”

*In December 2023, three local newsrooms were selected as recipients of the Info Challenge, a joint initiative between the Wichita Foundation (WF) and Tiny News Collective (TNC): Planeta Venus, the SHOUT and TMBP Media. Each newsroom received a $30,000 grant from Press Forward Wichita at WF and a two-year TNC membership, providing access to resources and connections with local news founders across the country.
