WF renews support for three local news startups

March 12, 2025 | Stories

At the Wichita Foundation, we believe that a strong, inclusive news ecosystem is essential to a thriving community. That’s why we renewed our partnership with Tiny News Collective (TNC) to amplify our investment in three Wichita news organizations: Planeta Venus, TMBP Media, and The SHOUT.

Through Press Forward Wichita, these startups have been trailblazers in creating spaces for underrepresented voices. As recipients of WF’s initial Info Challenge grants, they’ve begun reshaping Wichita’s news and information landscape, and we’re helping them take the next step toward sustainability.

In this extended partnership, TNC will guide these founders through strategic planning sessions, leadership development, and resource sharing. With additional funding and support, these publications will build on their recent achievements:

  • Planeta Venus hosted its inaugural Latino Awards Dinner in 2024, celebrating community achievements with 150 attendees at WSU Tech’s NICHE.  The publication is expanding its reach, especially in rural Kansas.
  • TMBP Media launched the “BLACK in One Piece” podcast and has grown its YouTube following to more than 2,500 subscribers, with episodes reaching 10,000 views. Founder Dr. Latasha Eley Kelly also opened Left on Read, a bookstore and event space.
  • The SHOUT has published work by 30 Kansas creatives, launched an arts and culture calendar, and plan to expand their audience and build their revenue.

“We’re thrilled to deepen our commitment to these three news startups,” said WF’s Chief Strategy Officer Courtney Bengtson. “Their work brings new perspectives to Wichita’s stories and TNC’s partnership ensures they have the resources to grow sustainably.”

This collaboration is part of our commitment to empowering diverse news entrepreneurs and fostering community-centric information. Stay tuned as these publications continue to shape Wichita’s narrative.
