TMBP Media* launched a new podcast, “BLACK in One Piece,” during Juneteenth to amplify voices in the Black community through thought-provoking interviews. Hosted by founder Dr. Latasha Eley Kelly, the show creates a space for guests to share their stories, challenges, and triumphs.
Ahead of the debut, Dr. Eley Kelly hosted a private screening of the episode “Blackity, Black, Black, Black,” featuring Joseph Shepard, chief of staff for Lead for America. Nearly 35 attendees – including family, friends, community members and WF staff – engaged in a panel discussion with the first three podcast guests.
"Although I watched the episode before the premiere, the screening allowed me to watch people’s reactions," said Dr. Eley Kelly. "I wondered if they would laugh at the things I thought were funny and they did. It was also great to see some head nods."
An attendee shared that while some anecdotes were unfamiliar, it sparked an "aha moment" about cultural gaps, inspiring a desire for more dialogue. For Dr. Eley Kelly, that feedback confirmed her goal of promoting meaningful conversations and learning opportunities across communities.
Although Dr. Eley Kelly had never considered herself a journalist, she now strongly commits to practicing journalistic integrity. This dedication led to a last-minute edit to the podcast's second episode, “Raisins in the Potato Salad,” featuring Zoë Stone from Charcutistry, a local catering company. During a discussion on code-switching, Dr. Eley Kelly realized she used the wrong term. She recorded a video correction, reinforcing her commitment to accuracy and trust with her audience.

*In December 2023, three local newsrooms were selected as recipients of the Info Challenge, a joint initiative between the Wichita Foundation (WF) and Tiny News Collective (TNC): Planeta Venus, the SHOUT and TMBP Media. Each newsroom received a $30,000 grant from Press Forward Wichita at WF and a two-year TNC membership, providing access to resources and connections with local news founders nationwide.
