Since its inception in 2023, Word to Life has seen significant success, empowering nearly 60 youth from four USD 259 middle schools to navigate their mental health challenges and thrive through artistic expression.
Facilitated by hip-hop artist Samuel Thompson and poet Desmond Bryant-White, the program allows students to explore and express their feelings and fears through writing lyrics or poetry. Word to Life falls under the umbrella of Destination Innovation and is supported by the Wichita Foundation.
“Support from the Class of Wichita Fund at WF has allowed us to build the foundation of the program,” said Destination Innovation Executive Director Marquetta Atkins-Woods. “We firmly believe our youth are the best investment we can make that yields the best returns.”
Most recently, the program was introduced to Sowers Alternative School. The school said they’ve seen a decrease in fights, reduction in drug and alcohol use, and an increase in self-respect and respect for the teachers.
"Since the implementation of this program, there has been a significant positive change in various Sowers students,” said Sowers Alternative School Behavior Tech Chris Robinson. “It is valuable to be able to meet young people where they are and create a safe space for them to process the situations happening in their life. Word to Life created a culture where the young people can be seen, heard and valued.”
